Breasts developing
Breast growth is often the first sign of puberty, and it is normal for it to feel sore or look uneven.

Breast growth is often the first sign of puberty. At first you may feel a firm little bump, about the size of a small button, right under your nipple. This is called a breast bud. Some girls get a fright when they find one, but it is simply growth beginning.
What is normal
- One side may start growing before the other. The difference usually gets smaller with time, and a slight difference stays in many adult women too.
- Breasts can feel tender when touched, or a bit tight.
- Growth is slow and goes on for several years.
- Shape and size vary from girl to girl. Size says nothing about health.
- The circle around the nipple can get darker and larger.
What you can do
You don't have to wear a bra. If you would feel more comfortable in one, a soft sports top or a plain cotton bra is enough. Start whenever you want to. Your mum, an aunt or a woman working in the shop can help you find the right size.
Creams, massage and tight binding do not speed up or stop breast growth, and binding tightly can hurt. If you see that advice online, skip it.
If people make comments
Sometimes classmates or even adults say things about your body. It is unpleasant and it isn't your fault. Nobody has the right to comment on your body. If it bothers you, tell an adult you trust.
