Dieting, skipping meals and online diet advice
A growing body needs regular meals, and online diet advice can do real harm at this age.
3 min
Your body has a lot to do in your teens. You are growing taller, your bones are getting stronger, your brain is developing and your periods are settling. All of that takes energy. Food is your source of energy, not your enemy.
What happens when you skip meals
- You may get headaches or feel dizzy.
- It is harder to concentrate in class.
- Your mood drops and you get irritable.
- You feel much hungrier later.
- Eating too little for a long time can harm your growth, bones and periods.
Gaining weight during puberty is normal. It shows your body is growing, not that something is wrong.
Online advice
Videos about losing weight fast are everywhere. They often come from people who aren't doctors or dietitians, and some are making money from them. Stay away from:
- Eating just one food, or not eating at all
- Slimming teas, pills and powders
- Calorie-counting challenges
- Videos comparing body sizes
- Anyone telling you to vomit after eating or to punish yourself
These products can be dangerous, so never take them on your own.
What helps
- Eat regularly and don't skip breakfast.
- Have a mix on your plate: vegetables, fruit, protein and grains.
- Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full.
- Don't ban your favourite sweets completely.
- Choose movement you enjoy, not exercise as punishment.
If you have questions about your weight, ask a doctor rather than the internet. They can answer for your age and height.
